by Bill Tibbitts, Coalition of Religious Communities Director Members of the the Coalition of Religious Communities are asking candidates for the Utah Senate if they support eliminating the sales tax on unprepared food. So far, seven candidates have told us that they do. If you would like to help ask other candidates where they stand on this issue go here to find our current list of candidates for the Utah Senate. Two facts about the sales tax on food: 1)The sales tax on food is weird and unpopular. That is why Only 15 states tax grocery purchases. 2) Food taxes are regressive and hurt low income families. Families in the bottom 20 percent for income spend 30 percent of their income on food. Families in the top 20 percent for income spend less than 10 percent of their income on food. |
