Yesterday the Salt Lake City Council, acting as the board for the city's Redevelopment Agency, unanimously agreed to spend $4 million to purchase an old and neglected motel located at 1500 W. North Temple with the intent of working with private sector developers to create a new mixed income apartment building. This project is one of five that Mayor Biskupski has proposed be included in a $21.6 million plan for producing hundreds of units of low income and affordable housing before the homeless shelter in downtown Salt Lake City is closed. You can find coverage of the Council meeting at the Salt Lake Tribune and KUTV.
Last week, the Coalition of Religious Communities presented this letter to Mayor Biskupski, County Mayor Ben McAdams and Governor Herbert challenging them to either take big actions to address the housing crisis or postpone the closure of the homeless shelter in downtown Salt Lake City. Mayor Biskupski graciously came out to talk to us and offer a few details about her proposal for how $21,6 million on low income housing. The Council will be discussing the rest of Mayor Biskupski's proposal at the next meeting of the Redevelopment Agency Board on November 14, 2017.
Please take a moment to let Mayor Biskupski and the City Council know you are grateful they are beginning to take action to make sure that families with children are not forced sleep in cars or on the street in two years when the shelter is closed.
