Saturday, May 14, was no ordinary day for postal carriers. USPS employees hosted their annual Stamp Out Hunger food drive, which requested that donations of nonperishable food be placed at the mailbox to be collected with the daily mail and begin its journey. From the postal carrier truck the food made it to USPS post office locations, passed through the hands of generous volunteers and was loaded onto the beds of trucks, into the backs of vans and the trunks of cars. After travelling several miles, the food finally found a resting place at local food pantries on the way to its final home with those in need. Crossroads is deeply grateful to be a distribution site benefiting from this event once again. Thank you to the incredible volunteers who made the movement of the food possible, to the postal carriers for selflessly adding work to their load and to the generous community. This year we received 13,130 pounds of food, an increase of 2,704 pounds from last year!! Our 33 volunteers donated over 118 hours of their time! This food allows us to continue supporting our neighbors in need. We cannot thank you enough!
While the Stamp Out Hunger food drive is incredibly helpful, we are in constant need of food at the pantry. Coming this July is our annual GOLDEN CELERY COMPETITION! Join other faith communities in a friendly competition to see who can round up the most pounds of food for the coveted Golden Celery trophy! Small congregations, don’t worry, we practice fairness – the award is granted based on a ratio of food poundage to group size. Thank you, in advance, for your participation and generosity. This drive fills an important need during a time of the year when donations dip. Let’s try to outdo the amazing 17, 670 pounds of food donated last year. Keep an eye out for upcoming correspondence with details about the competition. Happy Golden Celery season!
